Gerben Zijlstra is a leading expert in process intensification, integration, and continuous biomanufacturing, with over 25 years in the BioPharma industry. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wageningen, focusing on process integration in animal cell culture. At Patheon, he developed commercial biotherapeutics and advanced Process Intensification projects with Single Use bioreactors. Zijlstra invented the XD® Concentrated Fed-Batch technology, boosting productivity fivefold, and facilitated its scale-up to the Brisbane site, recognized by ISPE for process innovations. At Xendo, he worked on SU Continuous BioManufacturing and Gene Therapy projects. Currently, he is a Bioprocess Solutions Expert at Sartorius-Stedim Biotech.

Innovation Driving the Future of Intensified Bioprocessing

The bioprocessing industry faces challenges like rising costs and declining sales per product. With a shift to low-volume production for protein therapies and complex products like multi-specific Mabs, flexible, single-use facilities are needed to cut costs. Process intensification is crucial for reducing costs, expanding medicine access, and achieving sustainability goals. Sartorius is committed to innovative technologies for intensified bioprocessing. We present strategies to expedite development and lower GOGs, including the novel Ambr® 250 high-throughput perfusion systems and hybrid modeling for process optimization. Our Univessel® 10 L SU perfusion bioreactor aids scale-up and DSP development. Downstream, we offer MCC, RCC, and MS-MCC for purification, and the Pionic® Spin platform for viral inactivation. Digital solutions like Umetrics® and Biobrain® enhance process control and product release.
