Bioprocess Engineer R&D
Philip Giller is a Bioprocess Engineer at Levitronix GmbH, where he leads the bioprocessing laboratory within the Research & Development department. He collaborates closely with industry partners on the development and optimization of continuous bioprocesses. His expertise includes tangential flow filtration (TFF) and alternating tangential flow (ATF) applications in both upstream and downstream processing, as well as process analytical technology (PAT) integration. Philip holds a double Master of Science degree in Biotechnology and Food Sciences from the University of Applied Sciences FHNW in Muttenz and the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague.
Enhancing Scalability and Efficiency in TFF Hollow Fiber-Based Perfusion Systems
Continuous manufacturing is reshaping bioproduction, with perfusion cell culture at the forefront due to its efficiency and productivity gains. Yet, challenges such as filter fouling and scale-up limitations remain significant barriers. This presentation outlines practical strategies to enhance hollow fiber filtration performance by optimizing flow dynamics and reducing Starling recirculation a primary contributor to membrane inefficiency. By refining pressure profiles, redesigning pump and loop configurations, and introducing innovative alternating flow systems, we achieved improved filter throughput, increased product yield, and reliable scalability. These insights provide actionable solutions for building robust, high-performing perfusion platforms.
