Stephen is a Chartered Chemical Engineer, IChemE Fellow and Fellow of Engineers Ireland and has over 18 years’ experience in process engineering and facility design. He is the European Director of Process Technology where he has responsibility for management and development of the SME structure associated with Arcadis’ European operations as well as advising in early project stages. Stephen frequently presents at industry events and conferences and has authored or co-authored several technical papers including a paper on Multi-Modal Facility Design published in the ISPE PE Magazine (winner of the 2022 Roger F. Sherwood article of year award).

Single-Use Technology in Modern Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing

Single-use technology addresses multiple industry challenges including facilitating streamlined construction of flexible manufacturing facilities, and providing risk mitigation from batch to batch cross contamination for processes with greater biohazardous natures. It can also prompt diverse responses across the industry as to whether we should really be using such a quantity of single-use plastics in manufacturing processes. Sustainability is a complex issue for single-use technology which can be impacted by multiple factors. This lecture will discuss the use cases for single-use technology as well as the sustainability considerations, including how modern trends are changing the traditional arguments.
