Carlos Ferrero is a biotechnology graduate from Madrid with a Master's in Biochemical Engineering from London. He has over six years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry across a range of roles, including downstream manufacturing and his current position as a Field Application Scientist for Downstream Technologies at Thermo Fisher Scientific. In this role, he supports customers with downstream purification and single-use solutions, helping optimize bioprocesses through technical expertise and application-driven support. He is passionate about translating complex technologies into practical solutions that advance innovation in bioprocessing.

Driving flexible, cost-effective clarification across process scales with DynaSpin single-use centrifuge and Harvest RC clarifier platform

Increasing cell culture densities and process intensification are placing greater demands on harvest clarification in mAb manufacturing. Traditional filtrations can become challenging at larger scales due to increasing filter area requirements, facility footprint, and operational complexity. In this talk, conventional depth filtration is compared with single-use clarification strategies including direct clarification and centrifugation-based approach using the Thermo Scientific™ DynaSpin™ Single-Use Centrifuge followed by the Thermo Scientific™ Harvest RC Centrate Chromatographic Clarifier. Both workflows delivered consistent fluid quality with effective host-cell DNA removal and supported economically optimized harvest scalable strategies, with the centrifugation-based approach becoming the most cost-effective option above 2,000 L.
