|3M develops single use filtration and purification solutions which allow higher purity early on in the process and enable process intensification and simplification. The next product to be launched soon, 3MTM Polisher ST, is a single use AEX chromatography solution, which utilizes a new bio-inspired AEX ligand: guanidinium.
The new guanidinium ligand is tolerant to high salt conditions, low pH, and multi-valent buffers, which allows operating the AEX polishing chromatography step in a wider range of conditions. The technology will provide HCP removal and robust viral clearance at high loading capacities, resulting in a reduced footprint compared to resin-based columns.

One trend that will continue is using single use systems that allow process simplification and compression.
Processes will become more compact and unit operations need to become smaller, while still allowing the manufacturing plant to deliver the same or larger output of the product.
|Most important unsolved challenge?||New technologies often first arise in the largest segments, like monoclonal antibody production processes. These new technologies will have to be adapted and optimized for other segments, including vaccines and cell and gene therapies. In those processes, challenges remain in the separation and purification of cells and viruses, and separation of full and empty capsids, for example.|
